You most certainly can be religious and feminist. These anti theists often read the Bible like modern fundamentalists. They read the Bible with the dogmatic presupposition that the Bible is one essential univocal text with one opinion on women in leadership/ in the familial structure. They pick parts out of the Bible that fit with their beliefs and just completely ignore when the Bible says the complete opposite. I think this view comes from the belief that the Bible is this one univocal monolithic text which is just not true. The Bible is a collection of 66-73 texts written by different people at different times at different social contexts. There are many examples of the Bible being proto feminist but I will obviously not do the same fallacious reasoning and then go on to say that the Bible is feminist because that’s would be applying a single unchanging term to a wildly contrasting collection of texts. Here are examples of the Bible being more feminist than misogynistic: the Syrophenician woman correcting Jesus and getting him to expand his ministry to Gentiles (at that time it would be pretty much unheard of for a rabbi to lose a debate against a poor Gentile woman and the gospel writers could’ve just taken it out if they wanted but that’s how significant it was), Jesus himself breaking traditional patriarchal gender norms by being unmarried poor and accepting servitude, Jesus including women in his ministry which was very culture pushing for the time, Paul respecting Junia, Prisca and Phoebe as church leaders and apostles, women being respected political leaders, God being described with feminine and maternal imagery, the entire concept of Mariology, Galatians 3:28, women being financial backers of the early Jesus movement, the fact that Christianity hinges on the eye witness testimonies of women at a time where eye witness accounts of women were seen as worthless. I could go on and on. Again so nobody misunderstands my point I’m not saying the Bible is feminist I’m just saying acting like the Bible is wholly misogynistic is textbook Bublical essentialism.

They’ll say it’s out of context. They’ll say it’s not meant to be interpreted that way. They’ll say it’s just men’s interpretation of the text and that God isn’t really like that. But if your entire religion is built around a book that your church treats as sacred, how am I supposed to believe that something written in that book suddenly doesn’t count just because you say so? Suddenly, it’s not meant to be taken literally? Or YOUR church doesn’t interpret it that way? Well, look at what religion has done to women throughout history, and what has been done to women and other people in the name of religion. You can’t just dismiss all of that by claiming that people are interpreting your religion incorrectly whenever its teachings become uncomfortable to defend.
