As a kid growing up, I had to fix or replace wall outlets like that...I never bothered to turn the power off. Never got bit by 110. Being safe and being smart are more important than buying toys.

stranded wire, improper wire color, and a toaster tgat doesn't care about polarity. the only electricity load that cares about polarity are a/c motors, like in your vacuum.
