Well, Bridgeport Public Schools has settled another legal dispute. And in a stunning development that will surprise absolutely nobody familiar with government transparency, the public doesn’t know the settlement terms. Former principal Beth Furnari sued in 2024, alleging sex discrimination and a hostile work environment involving then-Superintendent Michael Testani. According to her complaint, Testani reprimanded her for contacting a PTO president to clarify concerns he’d raised. Furnari alleged that male principals weren’t treated the same way for similar conduct. So, apparently, communicating with parents could become a disciplinary issue depending on who was doing the communicating. At least, that’s what the lawsuit alleged. Now the Bridgeport Board of Education has unanimously approved a settlement following an executive session. The amount? Undisclosed. The conditions? Undisclosed. Whether taxpayer money is involved? Still unclear. HOW CONVENIENT. And before anyone starts screaming that settling proves wrongdoing, no. It doesn’t. Allegations aren’t findings, and a settlement isn’t an admission of liability. But that works both ways. Settling a lawsuit doesn’t magically erase the public’s interest in what happened, how the district responded, or what resolving the dispute cost. Furnari is now a principal in Norwalk. Testani? He’s superintendent of Fairfield Public Schools. Meanwhile, Bridgeport residents are left wondering what their school board just agreed to behind closed doors. And here’s where the absurdity really shines. Public school officials make decisions using public authority, potentially involving public money, but the public is apparently expected to accept a unanimous vote as sufficient explanation. Sorry. A closed-door agreement isn’t a substitute for accountability. If the settlement involves taxpayer funds, disclose the amount and any legally releasable terms. Bridgeport’s residents shouldn’t need a lawsuit of their own to find out what their school board agreed to. #connecticutnews #bridgeportct #publicschools #governmenttransparency #educationaccountability
