Explanation: Bally Bagayoko, the mayor of Saint-Denis and a member of La France Insoumise (LFI), realizing that being democratically elected doesn’t necessarily mean being respected by every institution of power. LFI is a left-wing political movement that challenges economic inequality, the concentration of wealth, police practices and the influence of billionaires over society. In France, many major media outlets are owned by wealthy businesspeople, raising legitimate concerns about media concentration, editorial independence and whose interests dominate public debate. This doesn’t mean every journalist is controlled by billionaires, but ownership can influence which narratives receive attention and how political movements are portrayed. With the 2027 presidential election approaching, the way political parties are represented in the media matters enormously. LFI is frequently at the centre of controversy, particularly over its positions on policing, social inequality and its support for student protests. Critics accuse the party of radicalism, while its supporters argue that its demands for social justice and police accountability are too often overshadowed by controversies. Bagayoko’s confrontation with the police during student protests raises a broader question: what happens when an elected representative challenges an institution whose officers do not necessarily share his political views? A mayor has democratic legitimacy, but that does not automatically give him command over the national police. The incident illustrates the tensions that can emerge between elected officials, law enforcement and political institutions. The deeper issue is the unequal distribution of power in society. Elections can change who governs a city, but they do not automatically transform established institutions, economic interests or the media landscape. When political power, economic wealth and influence over public debate are concentrated in different hands, a democratic mandate does not guarantee that an elected representative will be heard. And with another presidential election approaching, the struggle is not only about who wins votes. It is also about who gets to shape the public narrative, whose voices are taken seriously, and whether political and economic power can be held accountable by the people. #fyp #mayor #france #protest #blowup - @miika_0z
