For 50 years, the world believed Mama Cass died choking on a ham sandwich. She didn't. On July 29, 1974, Cass Elliot was found dead in her London apartment at just 32 years old. She had recently finished a sold-out run at the London Palladium. On her nightstand was an untouched ham sandwich. By the next morning, newspapers were reporting that she had choked on it. The story was completely false. Cass's manager had reportedly encouraged the rumor because he feared the press would blame drugs for her death. A journalist repeated the claim, and within hours it had become an international story. But the official autopsy told a different story. Coroner Keith Simpson determined that Cass had died from heart failure associated with fatty degeneration of the heart muscle. No drugs were found in her system, and there was no evidence that food had blocked her airway. The sandwich had nothing to do with her death. Yet the myth survived for decades. And perhaps the cruelest part was why people were so willing to believe it. Cass had spent much of her career being ged by ner body rather than her extraordinary voice. Born Ellen Naomi Cohen in Baltimore, she became one of the defining voices of The Mamas & the Papas. California Dreamin'. Monday, Monday. Dream a Little Dream of Me. Her voice was unforgettable. But the music industry constantly pressured her to lose weight. She reportedly endured repeated crash diets and extreme attempts to change her body. She was expecteo to become smaller betore the worl would allow her to become bigger Despite everything, Cass kept performing. She raised her daughter, Owen, largely on her own and was remembered by triends as generous, warm, and deeply caring. Then she died. And instead of remembering the singer, the mother, and the extraordinary woman, the world turned her death into a joke. Her daughter spent decades hearing strangers repeat the sandwich story. In 2020, the journalist who helped spread the original claim publicly acknowledged what had happened-46 years after Cass's death. The truth had finally caught up with the rumor. Cass Elliot was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Her voice remains everywhere. She didn't choke on a sandwich. She died from heart failure. The sandwich was a myth. The voice was real. And 50 years later, that voice still speaks louder than the lie. - @fabrisgassmoney
