Known internationally as Tula, Caroline was already an accomplished model when she met David, a Canadian engineer, in London in 1991. When she told him about her life as a trans woman, David later recalled feeling surprised at first. But rather than walking away, he chose to learn more about her and get to know the woman he had met. Their connection grew, David proposed later that year, and they married in 1992. In a 2016 interview, Caroline reflected on how David helped restore her faith in loyalty, integrity, and love. Their story does not erase the prejudice she faced, but it reminds us that a trans woman’s identity does not make her any less deserving of tenderness, commitment, or a lasting relationship.
