Hi, actual lawyer here, this is not true. Probate is a method to litigate will challenges. It is not automatic and does not have to cost $15k.

My grandmother had a will. Not all surviving children wanted to follow Will and chose for it not to go through probate. So it didn’t and all assets were split between the kids (she wanted the grandchildren to have a specific amount before the rest was divided).

My dad did not have a will. I went through Probate and I paid around $2,500. That was mainly attorney costs. I’m an only child and his wife was deceased.

You don't need a lawyer to go through probate( that's where her $15k is coming from) and depending on your situation you can file for cost waivers/indigent. If a person is still paying a mortgage, putting a home in a trust can sometimes do more harm then good...these panels are good for bringing up the conversation but its very surface level, take what they are saying and go seek a personal consultation.
