@jimmyhernandezii: I saw this graph that showed the ways a boy views their fathers through the years… and it changed the way I look at fatherhood. Not because it made fatherhood seem harder. Because it made me realize how often a dad can be doing his best and still miss what his son actually needs from him in that season. That hit me. We spend so much time thinking about what kind of father we want to be, but not enough time thinking about how our sons are actually experiencing us while they grow. And that perspective changes a lot. Especially when you realize your son will not always see you the way he does right now. It definitely made me want to be better. Do better. To evolve as a father through all of the stages. Share with a dad. #fatherhood #dadlife #discipline #dad #provider

Whenever my sons used to say, “Dad, I wanna be like you.” My reply was always with a polite smile, “Nah, man… Be better, because I believe you can.”

My son saw me do something totally selfless for my wife the other day, which he's seen many times but never acknowledged it. This time he did and he goes "yea mom married the right man". it about brought me to tears

when my son was little he'd walk me to the door omw to work to make sure he was the last one that got a hug before I left. hes now 13 and I gotta come to him in his room to tell him I love him and that im leaving, I still get that hug cause I work in a high risk field. but man I wonder sometimes when imma say "ay boy im leaving I love you" and all I get is "love u too pops bye." while he plays his video games...no hug...

So true! Then as a dad, you have to decide if your man enough to admit your short comings and have the tough conversation and grow together as men.

It’s the same with daughters. Except they ask themselves “is my dad the kind of man I want to marry?”

Life has a way of humbling you as you grow older. The little boy who once pushed back against his father and swore he’d never be like him eventually becomes a man who understands. You begin to recognize the sacrifices, the struggles, and the opportunities your father gave you that you were too young to appreciate. Although his love was often tough, and he may not have always expressed it the right way, one thing remained constant: he never left your side. He showed up, he stayed, and he did the best he could with what he knew. As you experience life for yourself, you begin to understand that your father wasn’t perfect, but he never had to be. He was simply a man trying to raise you the best way he knew how. And with time, the very man you once swore you’d never become turns into the man you can only hope to be half as good as.
