Matthew 15:26-28 I have sat with this passage, and I confess it once confused me. A weary JESUS, slipping away from the crowds into the Gentile coastlands of Tyre and Sidon, is found anyway. A Canaanite MOTHER CRIES OUT for her tormented daughter. And He answers, "IT IS NOT GOOD TO TAKE THE CHILDREN'S BREAD AND THROW IT TO THE DOGS." Torn from its CONTEXT, it sounds cold... can even cruel. But I HAVE LEARNED that whenever the Word sounds harsh, I AM being invited to listen DEEPER. Literally, JESUS IS SPEAKING WITHIN His mission of that hour, TO THE LOST SHEEP of Israel first. The Greek gives us KYNARIOIS...or "LITTLE DOGS," the household pets BENEATH the table, not the wild scavengers that roamed the ancient streets in packs. Yet here is where I BELIEVE SOMETHING PRECIOUS slipped through the fingers of translation. Jesus DID NOT speak Greek on that shore. He spoke GALILEAN ARAMAIC, and in Aramaic the word for dog, KALBA, carries a LIVING SOUND, a family of meanings that a written Greek diminutive CANNOT hold. Many hear in the Semitic root THE ECHO OF THE HEART, LEV, KALEV, "LIKE A HEART." CALEB, the FAITHFUL ONE who followed the Lord wholly, bears THAT VERY NAME. So when Jesus spoke "DOG" in His mother tongue, He may have been speaking a riddle ONLY A LISTENING HEART COULD ANSWER. Symbolically, THE TABLE IS THE COVENANT, THE BREAD IS THE LIVING PRESENCE OF GOD, and THE CHILDREN ARE THOSE RAISED INSIDE THE HOUSE OF PROMISE. The little dog is THE ONE WHO STANDS OUTSIDE THE BOUNDARIES OF BIRTH, TRADITION, and LAW, yet... who STILL KNOWS BY INSTINCT WHERE THE MASTER SITS. Notice SHE DOES NOT argue her worthiness. She simply says, "YES, LORD, YET EVEN THE LITTLE DOGS EAT THE CRUMBS THAT FALL FROM THEIR MASTER'S TABLES." SHE ACCEPTS THE IMAGE and TURNS IT INTO A DOORWAY !!! Psychologically, THIS IS THE MOMENT EVERY SOUL MUST FACE. JESUS HOLDS UP A MIRROR, and THE EGO IS OFFERED EVERY REASON TO BE OFFENDED and WALK AWAY. Pride would have answered, "How dare you call me that?" But instead... SHE BOWS BENEATH THE WORD AND RISES THROUGH IT. HER HUMILITY IS NOT SELF-HATRED. IT IS THE FREEDOM OF ONE WHO NO LONGER NEEDS A TITLE TO APPROACH GOD. THE MOMENT I STOPPED DEFENDING MY PLACE AT THE TABLE, I FOUND I HAD BEEN FED ALL ALONG. Mystically, I hear THE ARAMAIC HEART of this exchange as a dialogue between Spirit and spirit. In Aramaic, FAITH, "HAYMANUTHA", is NOT MERELY BELIEF... but STEADFAST TRUST, A FIRMNESS OF SOUL ROOTED IN THE BEING OF GOD. When Jesus cries, "O WOMAN, GREAT IS YOUR FAITH," He is NOT grading her theology. HE IS RECOGNIZING A HEART THAT HAS BECOME IMMOVABLE IN HIM. THE TEST WAS NEVER TO WOUND HER. IT WAS TO REVEAL TO HER AND TO US WHAT WAS ALREADY BURNING INSIDE HER. Esoterically, THE CRUMB IS EVERYTHING. ONE CRUMB OF THE BREAD OF LIFE CONTAINS THE WHOLE LOAF... just as ONE DROP OF THE OCEAN HOLDS IT'S SALT. SHE UNDERSTOOD WHAT MANY AT THE TABLE HAD NOT: that THE DIVINE PRESENCE CANNOT BE RATIONED. WHAT FALLS FROM THE MASTER'S HAND IS NOT LEFTOVER; IT IS THE FULLNESS, GIVEN IN A FORM SMALL ENOUGH FOR THE HUMBLE TO RECEIVE. The Greek records a transaction of words. The Aramaic, spoken face to face, BREATHES A MYSTERY OF GRACE. Cosmically, this woman of Canaan, the ancient enemy, STANDS AT THE HINGE OF SALVATION HISTORY. THROUGH HER, THE WALL BETWEEN ISRAEL and THE NATIONS BEGINS TO CRACK. HER DAUGHTER IS HEALED FROM A DISTANCE THAT VERY HOUR, showing that CHRIST'S POWER IS NOT BOUND BY GEOGRAPHY, BLOODLINE, or BORDER. THE COVENANT BREAD WAS ALWAYS MEANT TO OVERFLOW THE TABLE AND FEED THE WHOLE WORLD. Metaphysically, SHE TEACHES US THAT THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN INSIDE and OUTSIDE IS REAL ONLY UNTIL LOVE CROSSES IT. Before THE CHRIST WITHIN US, there are NO strangers, ONLY HEARTS WAITING TO RECOGNIZE HIM. So I ask myself, and I ask you... WILL WE TAKE OFFENSE at the mirror, or will WE kneel and say, "Yes, Lord, yet even I"? THE CRUMB THAT FALLS FROM HIS TABLE IS ENOUGH TO HEAL THE WORLD.
