J1407b (often called "Super-Saturn") is a unique cosmic object in the constellation Centaurus, located about 434 light-years from Earth. Weighing around 20 times the mass of Jupiter, scientists classify it as either a giant exoplanet or a brown dwarf [wikipedia.org]. Its defining feature is a colossal ring system made of over 30 individual rings spanning 90 million kilometers in radius, which is hundreds of times larger than Saturn's ring system. Discovered in 2012, the object caught astronomers' attention when it blocked up to 95% of its host star's light for an unprecedented 56 days [wikipedia.org]. This long and complex transit was caused by the massive ring system passing in front of the star. Clear gaps found within these rings strongly suggest that large exomars or Earth-sized moons have already formed or are currently shaping up inside the disk. Recent studies, however, question the exact orbit of J1407b. Because no other transits have been detected in over a century of archival data, astronomers suspect it might actually be a "rogue planet." If true, this means it is not bound to any star but freely roams interstellar space, and simply happened to pass in front of the star right when we were watching. #planets #astro #astrophysics #saturn
