🐎 FRIDAY BLOODLINE CONNECTIONS | LA TROIENNE (1926) The Mare Who Never Won a Race but Helped Shape Generations of Champions By WinningStride Every Stride Tells a Story Some Thoroughbreds become legends through their performances on the racetrack. Others leave their greatest mark through the generations that follow. La Troienne belongs to the second group. Foaled in France in 1926, she was by Teddy (1913) out of Helene de Troie (1916), by Helicon (1908). Despite her distinguished pedigree, she never won a race, finishing her career with seven starts, one second, and one third. In December 1930, Colonel E. R. Bradley purchased her at Newmarket for 1,250 guineas. She was imported to Kentucky in 1931, where she joined his breeding operation at Idle Hour Stock Farm. That decision would have an extraordinary impact on American Thoroughbred breeding. La Troienne produced 14 named foals, including 10 winners and two American champions. Her daughter Black Helen (1932), by Black Toney (1911), became the champion 3-year-old filly of 1935. Her son Bimelech (1937), also by Black Toney, became a two-time American champion and captured both the 1940 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. But her greatest influence extended far beyond her immediate offspring. THE FAMILY THAT FOLLOWED Through Baby League (1935), by Bubbling Over (1923), she became the granddam of Busher (1942), the 1945 Horse of the Year, and Striking (1947), an influential broodmare. Through Businesslike (1939), by Blue Larkspur (1926), came Busanda (1947), whose son Buckpasser (1963) became the 1966 Horse of the Year and one of America’s most influential broodmare sires. Through Big Hurry (1936), by Black Toney, came Searching (1952), the dam of champion Affectionately (1960). Another branch of Big Hurry’s family eventually produced Easy Goer (1986), winner of the 1989 Belmont Stakes and multiple Grade 1 races. And through Black Helen, her family eventually produced Go for Gin (1991), winner of the 1994 Kentucky Derby. THE WAR ADMIRAL CONNECTION One of the most fascinating connections in La Troienne’s family involved War Admiral (1934), the 1937 Triple Crown winner and son of Man o’ War. War Admiral was bred to several of La Troienne’s daughters, producing multiple successful runners and influential broodmares. With Baby League, he sired Busher (1942), the 1945 Horse of the Year, and Striking (1947), the 1961 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. With Big Hurry, he sired Searching (1952), a Hall of Fame racemare who became the dam of champion Affectionately (1960). With Businesslike, he sired Busanda (1947), whose son Buckpasser (1963) became the 1966 Horse of the Year. Through these matings, the bloodlines of La Troienne and War Admiral came together repeatedly, creating several important branches of American Thoroughbred breeding. A REMARKABLE SURVIVAL STORY In November 1938, La Troienne suffered a serious accident during a storm. Frightened by the weather, she collided with a tree and severely injured her right shoulder. At the time, she was carrying Businesslike, the future granddam of Buckpasser. Despite the severity of her injuries, La Troienne survived, and Businesslike was born the following year. La Troienne died on January 30, 1954, but her influence continued through generations of champions, classic winners, and important breeding families. From Bimelech and Busher to Buckpasser, Easy Goer, and Go for Gin, her descendants carried her legacy across decades of Thoroughbred racing. The mare who never won a race became one of the most influential broodmares in American racing history. La Troienne reminds us that a horse’s greatest legacy is not always written in the record books. Sometimes it is written in the bloodlines of champions yet to come. #WinningStride #BloodlineConnections #LaTroienne #ThoroughbredRacing #HorseRacing
