@pirate1.0: The Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne was a radical, high-speed compound attack helicopter developed for the U.S. Army's Advanced Aerial Fire Support System (AAFSS) program in the 1960s, designed to correct the speed, survivability, and firepower deficiencies of the AH-1 Cobra . It was a technological marvel for its time, featuring a rigid four-bladed main rotor, low-mounted stub wings for lift, and a tail-mounted pusher propeller that allowed it to reach speeds over 200 knots (230 mph), nearly twice as fast as contemporary helicopters . The Cheyenne was heavily armed with a nose turret (7.62mm minigun or 40mm grenade launcher), a belly turret with a 30mm cannon, and six external hardpoints capable of carrying TOW anti-tank missiles and rocket pods . One of its most distinctive features was the gunner's station in the front cockpit, where the entire seat, sighting system, and firing controls could rotate 360 degrees to keep the gunner facing the direction of the turret being aimed . Despite its promise, the program was plagued by technical issues with the rigid rotor system, a fatal crash in 1969, rising costs, and political opposition from the U.S. Air Force over close air support roles, leading to its cancellation in August 1972 . Its legacy lived on, however, as the Army's next attack helicopter program produced the far more conventional AH-64 Apache . #lockheedmartin #usarmy #ah56cheyenne
