WHAT YOU SHOULD NEVER DO WHILE TREKKING GORILLAS TO AVOID BEING ATTACKED. 1. Avoid direct eye contact. Do not stare directly into a gorilla's eyes, especially when a silverback is approaching or displaying. Remain calm and follow the instructions of your ranger guide. 2. Never touch a gorilla. Even if a gorilla comes extremely close to you, do not reach out to touch it. Allow the animal to decide where it wants to move while you remain still and calm. 3. Don't make unnecessary noise. Avoid shouting, screaming, laughing loudly or making sudden sounds. Keep your voice low and allow the gorillas to continue their natural behavior. 4. Don't make sudden or unnecessary movements. If gorillas approach you or pass close by, remain calm. If your ranger instructs you to create space, move slowly and carefully backwards. Never make sudden movements toward the gorillas. 5. Don't run when a silverback beats his chest. A chest beat can be a display or communication signal and does not automatically mean the silverback is about to attack. Running can create an unnecessary reaction. Stay calm, avoid provoking the animal and follow your ranger's instructions. 6. Never use flash photography. Flash can disturb or startle the gorillas. Always make sure your camera or phone flash is switched off before entering the sighting area. 7. If a mother gorilla appears to offer you her baby, don't accept it. It may look like an unbelievable moment, but this is still a wild animal interaction. Do not reach out or attempt to take the infant. Let the mother maintain control and follow the ranger's instructions. And perhaps the most important rule: Don't try to manage the encounter yourself. Listen to your ranger guide. Our guides and trackers spend a great deal of time understanding gorilla behavior and reading the situation around the group. If a silverback approaches, the safest response is not to panic, run or try to scare him away. Stay calm. Stay respectful. Stay predictable. You are a visitor in their forest, and the best gorilla encounter is one where the animals remain comfortable enough to continue behaving naturally.
