Peg in PNW :
This is the first year that we had two different kindergarten students show up to meet their teachers and it was immediately recognized that these children needed far more supports than a general education kindergarten class could provide. The sped team initiated an evaluation within the first week of school. The students were requested that they not attend school until we could set up the right setting. They both started last week, 1/2 days in a more restrictive environment until we could meet with the parents and teachers to review the evaluation and implement an IEP. We’ve met on one child who now has started attending full-time in a structured learning class. We also met with our Special Services department to request additional supports (1:1) for one of the children. In the past, our school has made the student start in the regular classroom, with disastrous results for both students and teachers. This was a much more proactive response with good results so far.

It’s happening in Pre-K. I know there is two adults and Kindergarten usually only has one teacher, it’s just frustrating. Why can’t admin come to our class for more than 5-20min to see for themselves 😩Pre-K and Kindergarten should be having fun with learning!!!!

The last two weeks of school last year, my kindergarten for whatever reason decided to act a fool. He has an IEP for social/emotional things. But had done SO GOOD all year. He has two older brothers who also are in sped & have IEPs. Middle brother is autistic. Sped teacher calls me because youngest is eloping & running through the high school section of the school & they can’t physically grab him. I said see you in a few. One of the paras we love saw me and said oooooooh they called in the big dog 💀 fixed that bullshit behavior right then and there.

I have 2. 1 with diagnosis of ADHD. We had a problem-solving meeting, but it really solved no problems. I get no help and I have 21 other kids in that class that suffer because of these two. My mental health suffers because of these two. And there’s no help.

What if your the parent of said child and having to ask everyday if he did anything out of normal let me know a quick message kid had hard Time listening today was angry today just a quick note to help reinforce that that behavior is not OK .also have been fighting to have them evaluate him. But met with nothing we can do and I have appointments lined up. But no relief for teacher or child is being given. Also said maybe he ain’t ready met with no we want him here. Well gotta give more so I can help. Feel as though some schools are not helpful but my teacher son is amazing

Yes girl!!! I hope the other teachers that follow appreciate that I worked my 🍑 off to get them placed because I don’t get to benefit from all that data collection, all those interventions and all those observations!!! We are fighting for our lives w/ some of these kids!! What kills me is that my kids that want to learn have to sit and wait while I deal with the 4 that devour my attention with their behaviors and lack of interest in learning!! The placement process is infuriating, too long and too consuming!! Something has got to give and it’s usually the teacher who packs up her 💩 and walks out the door!!! I know several that are quietly boxing up their things…. The education exit is coming…. 😔

in my child's school district, you had to word your request extremely specifically in order to get a full psych evaluation so that your child could qualify for an IEP. every time I asked my child's kinder teacher about the testing, they would give me a blank look and be like. I don't know what you mean. I don't know what you're talking about. I don't know what you mean. it wasn't until I had to do a ton of personal research and I'm a teacher. mind you and realize what I had to do to actually get the full psychological evaluation form and child whom I thought had autism. he would crawl under tables and become nonverbal. when asked to do stuff he could not complete tasks. he would not speak for hours and just huddle under something for hours. not moving. not speaking, not responding. it was so frustrating and exhausting. it turned out he didn't have autism. ADHD and executive function and he had an IQ of 140 but he's neurodivergent and so he struggled with communication. he's still to this day. struggles with communication at 15.
