@teresondupuy: Were you wearing a mask in that relationship? You may have been—and you might not even realize it. We are usually much better at seeing somebody else’s masks than our own. And not every mask looks false or manipulative. Some masks look beautiful. The healer. The angel. The endlessly understanding woman. The self-sacrificing partner. The person who always says: “I understand.” “Take all the time you need.” “I’m okay.” “I don’t need anything.” When underneath it, you are hurt. Angry. Afraid. Resentful. Exhausted. Wanting more. That is still a mask. Because authenticity is not saying the spiritually evolved thing while your body is screaming something completely different. And people can often feel that incongruence. Maybe part of your healing is learning that you do not have to perform goodness in order to be loved. You can have needs. You can be disappointed. You can say no. You can tell the truth. You can stop being the healer and simply be a human being. Secure love does not require a performance. It requires your actual presence.
