"His account was quickly exposed as untrue” Nathan Owen, 33, from North Wales, rang 999 claiming that he couldn’t stop his Jaguar on a busy motorway due to it malfunctioning. But it was all a cover story because he had fallen behind on the finance payments for his car he could not afford. Owen's car was stationary when he called the police on 6 March 2024, before calling his finance company to top up a loan, which was refused. When police arrived at the scene, the Jaguar I-Pace was being driven at high speeds. Police then assisted the driver to bring the car to a safe stop. But Owen collided with a police car 31 times. Police footage from the scene showed Owen successfully applying the brakes until it stopped in the fast lane, as three police cars surrounded him. Police examined the vehicle and found no faults. The day after the incident, Owen contacted the media claiming there were defective brakes in this make of car. Owen was arrested and charged with dangerous driving and two counts of fraud. He initially pleaded not guilty but was sentenced to four years and three months’ imprisonment on 3 August 2026, at Liverpool Crown Court. He was also disqualified from driving for a total of 80 months. Andrew Blennerhassett, from the Crown Prosecution Service said “Nathan Owen had full control of his vehicle that day. “He created a serious and entirely avoidable risk to other road users and to the police officers involved. “Faced with financial difficulties, Owen devised a calculated and dishonest way to avoid paying the costs of owning a luxury vehicle, by falsely claiming it was defective. "His account was quickly exposed as untrue, and his decision to place his own financial interests above public safety has now resulted in a custodial sentence.” #5News #Fraud #police
