1.STOP REREADING THE SAME THING If you've read the same page three times and still don't understand it, reading it a fourth time probably won't magically fix the problem. Stop. Ask yourself: “What exactly don't I understand?” Is it the terminology? The mathematics? The concept? The previous topic you're supposed to know? Identify the gap before trying to fill it. 2. GO BACK TO THE FOUNDATION Engineering is interconnected. You can't properly understand some advanced topics if the fundamentals underneath them are weak. For example, if a circuit analysis topic is confusing you, you may need to revisit: Algebra Differential equations Basic circuit concepts Transfer functions Don't be ashamed to go backwards. Going back to the foundation is not falling behind. It's fixing the foundation. 3. LEARN THE CONCEPT BEFORE THE FORMULA Don't begin with: “Which formula do I use?” Begin with: “What is happening physically?” Ask: What does this concept describe? What causes what? What do the variables represent? What assumptions are being made? Why does this relationship exist? Once the concept becomes clear, the mathematics becomes much easier to follow. 4. FIND A SIMPLER EXPLANATION Your lecturer's explanation may not be the explanation your brain needs. Use another textbook, lecture video, tutorial, classmate, or other reliable learning resource. Sometimes you don't need more information. You need the same information explained differently. 5. WORK THROUGH ONE EXAMPLE SLOWLY Don't immediately attempt ten difficult questions. Take one solved example. Understand every single step. Ask: Why was this equation used here? Where did this value come from? Why was this assumption made? What would change if the question changed? Understanding one problem deeply is more valuable than copying ten solutions you don't understand. 6. CLOSE THE SOLUTION AND DO IT YOURSELF This is where real learning begins. After studying the example, close the book. Take a blank sheet and solve the problem from scratch. If you get stuck, identify exactly where you got stuck, check that step, close the solution again, and continue. Don't confuse watching someone solve a problem with knowing how to solve it yourself. 7. PROGRESS FROM EASY → MODERATE → DIFFICULT Don't jump from “I understand nothing” straight into the hardest past question. Build your competence gradually. Basic question → Standard question → Application question → Past question → Difficult problem Every level prepares you for the next. 8. EXPLAIN THE TOPIC WITHOUT YOUR NOTES When you think you've understood it, close everything. Explain the concept aloud as if you're teaching a junior student. If you can't explain it simply, you've probably found another gap. Go back. Fix it. Try again. Teaching is one of the best tests of genuine understanding. 9. KEEP A “MISTAKE BOOK” Don't just record the questions you got wrong. Record why you got them wrong. For example: Misunderstood the concept. Used the wrong equation. Forgot a unit conversion. Made an algebraic error. Misread the question. Didn't know the prerequisite. Over time, you'll discover patterns in your mistakes. And once you know your weaknesses, you can deliberately eliminate them. #EngineeringTips #StudyEngineering #EngineeringStudent #UniversityStudents #StudentSuccess
