@nightflightseverywhere: There’s something so confusing about meeting somebody who feels like they were supposed to become a huge part of your life, only for them to disappear almost as quickly as they arrived. Because how do you explain missing somebody you barely even had? You didn’t spend years together. You might not have even made it to an official relationship. Maybe you only talked for a few weeks, went on a handful of dates, or spent one unforgettable night together. But somehow that person managed to make you feel things you hadn’t felt in months, maybe even years. The conversations were effortless. The chemistry was ridiculous. You had the same sense of humor, understood each other’s references, and somehow ended up discussing your childhood, your biggest fears, and your future plans like you’d known each other forever. And for a brief moment, everything felt strangely aligned. You weren’t forcing anything. You weren’t trying to convince yourself to like them. You were just sitting there thinking, Where have you been this entire time? 😭 Then suddenly something happens. The timing is wrong. One of you moves away. Somebody isn’t emotionally available. Life gets complicated. Or the connection simply stops developing, and you’re left wondering how something that felt so natural could end so abruptly. That’s what makes these almost-relationships so difficult to process. You aren’t necessarily grieving a long history together. You’re grieving the possibility of a history you never got to create. You don’t have years of memories to look back on, so your mind starts filling in all the moments that never happened. The trips you might’ve taken. The conversations you would’ve had. The version of the relationship that could’ve existed if circumstances had been different. And because you never got far enough to experience the ordinary difficulties of being together, the connection can remain almost impossibly perfect in your memory. You remember the chemistry without ever discovering whether you would’ve handled conflict well. You remember the excitement without knowing whether your values and lifestyles were truly compatible. That’s why a brief connection can sometimes occupy more space in your mind than a relationship that lasted much longer. Not necessarily because that person was your soulmate, but because the story ended before reality had a chance to answer all your questions. And maybe that’s the hardest part to accept. Something can feel extraordinary without being destined to last. A connection can be genuine even when it doesn’t become a relationship. You can meet somebody who reminds you that you’re still capable of feeling excited, understood, and deeply attracted to another person, and they might not be the person you ultimately build your life with. That doesn’t make the experience meaningless. Maybe they were never supposed to be your forever person. Maybe they were simply somebody who crossed your path for a moment and left you with a feeling you’ll remember for a long time. And sometimes the strangest people to miss aren’t the ones you spent years loving. They’re the ones you barely got to know before life interrupted what felt like the beginning of something beautiful.
