Qazi Muhammad: The Leader of the Republic of Mahabad Qazi Muhammad (1893–1947) was a Kurdish political and religious leader who played an important role in modern Kurdish history. He is best known for founding and leading the Republic of Mahabad, a short-lived Kurdish republic established in northwestern Iran in 1946. His leadership became an important symbol of Kurdish national identity, self-government, and the struggle for political rights. Qazi Muhammad was born in Mahabad, a city in the Kurdish region of northwestern Iran. He came from a respected religious family and became a religious judge, which is where the title “Qazi” comes from. Over time, he became increasingly involved in Kurdish political affairs and sought greater rights and political representation for Kurdish people. On January 22, 1946, the Republic of Mahabad was officially proclaimed in Mahabad. Qazi Muhammad became its president. The republic aimed to establish Kurdish self-government, promote the Kurdish language, and develop Kurdish cultural and political institutions. During its existence, Kurdish language and education received greater attention, and the republic became an important moment in the development of modern Kurdish nationalism. However, the Republic of Mahabad faced serious challenges. It depended partly on Soviet support during the period following World War II, when international tensions were high. After Soviet forces withdrew from northern Iran, the Iranian government regained control of the region. In December 1946, Iranian forces entered Mahabad, bringing the republic to an end. Qazi Muhammad was arrested by Iranian authorities and later tried. On March 31, 1947, he was executed in Mahabad, along with several other Kurdish political figures. His death was a major turning point in the history of the republic, but his legacy continued among Kurdish communities. Today, Qazi Muhammad is remembered by many Kurds as a symbol of leadership, national identity, and the pursuit of self-determination.
