Just got baby turkeys and not sure what they’re saying? Here are five common poult sounds and what they may mean. 1. Short “tic” or peep ✨ This is usually a curious or investigative sound. Poults may make it when they are exploring a new brooder, noticing something unfamiliar, or finding feed. 2. Yelp / “Marco Polo” call 🚨 This is a contact call. Poults often make this sound when they are separated from the group and are trying to find the others. You may hear them call back and forth until they regroup. 3. Bubbly purr 🤗 This is usually a happy & content sound. Poults may make this soft, rolling noise while eating, foraging, settling in for sleep, or dust bathing. 4. Soft, low “kee-kee” 🫤 This can be a mild uncertainty or neutral call. A poult may make this sound when it is unsure, confused, or uncomfortable. 5. Loud, drawn-out “kee-kee” 💥 This is more urgent. It can be a sign that a poult is cold, tired, separated, or uncomfortable and needs you to check the brooder. Have you heard these noises from your turkey poults before?
