Travelling through rural Central Kenya, you catch glimpses of a world we have been slowly burying. A world whose richness we perhaps did not know how to measure before we began to leave it behind. Several houses in one homestead. An outside kitchen. A raised granary. Whenever I see such a home, I pause, and for a little moment, I step into the old living of our people. My eyes linger longest on the granary. There, the family kept what the earth had given them in return for their labour. Maize hung in strings beneath the eaves, sometimes reaching into the kitchen rafters. Inside were grains and whatever else the harvest had allowed them to put away. I love the thought of that place - One large basket, standing above the ground, into which the hands of a family had poured their work, and from which those same hands could draw their supper. Several houses in one homestead, several fires to feed, and a place where each could come for something to cook. Even a visitor’s kiondo belonged to this quiet exchange. It arrived carrying something from another patch of earth, was emptied into the household’s stores, then filled with whatever the visitor did not have back home. Beans for maize. Potatoes for something the rains had spared elsewhere. I find such tenderness in that small act: someone bending over a basket, making room for food that would be cooked in a kitchen they might never sit in. The visitor would lift it onto their back and leave with a little of this home travelling with them. That several families could live within one homestead makes the picture more beautiful still. A child had several doors through which to enter and be received. An old person could sit outside and have someone to speak to without arranging a visit. Even the ordinary business of the day—the sorting of beans, the shelling of maize, the watching of children—gave people reason to sit together. Was man not intended to live in a community? To hear his name called across a compound? To grow old within reach of the voices he had spent his life loving? Then my eyes turn towards the kitchen, with its smoke rising through the roof, and I smile. To have a kitchen where a fire lives at any hour of the day is a blessing. A child can slip in from playing, crouch beside the hearth and find something warm to eat. He tosses the roasted potato between his hands, blows on it, peels it badly, eats it anyway. Before running out again, he reaches for a ripe banana from the bunch resting among leaves in the corner, ripening in its own good time. There is a richness in that scene that I would struggle to put a price on. Food within reach. A fire someone has kept going. The freedom of a child to be hungry in his own home and know where to go. Ah, that is a flex. To keep a home where a child can run in hungry and run out again, still thinking only of play.
