Beyond the Postcard: Coober Pedy, Australia From above ground, Coober Pedy can look like you've landed on another planet. But some of the most interesting parts of this Australian outback town aren't above ground at all. They're underneath it. Coober Pedy became famous for opal mining, and as miners dug into the surrounding rock, people discovered something else rather useful about living underground: It was considerably more comfortable than dealing with the extreme temperatures outside. So they started building underground spaces known locally as “dugouts.” And we're not talking about somebody carving out a tiny cave and throwing a sleeping bag in it. There are underground homes, hotels, shops and churches carved into the rock. You can even visit Coober Pedy and sleep underground yourself. The town is also surrounded by an otherworldly landscape shaped by decades of opal mining, which is one reason the area has been used as a filming location for movies. This is exactly why I started Beyond the Postcard. Sometimes the most interesting travel experiences aren't the famous landmarks. They're the places that make you say: “Wait. People actually LIVE there?” So now I have to know. Would you spend the night underground in Coober Pedy? #WrightsMagicalTravels #SaintSinnerSuitcase #BeyondThePostcard #CooberPedy #AustraliaTravel #SouthAustralia #OutbackAustralia #UndergroundLiving #ExperientialTravel #UniqueTravel
