Rick Prime existed in a multiverse containing countless realities, many of which contained their own versions of Rick, Morty, and the people surrounding them. He possessed extraordinary scientific knowledge, understood portal technology, and knew enough about Rick Sanchez to anticipate many of the methods Rick might use against him. He also had little reason to leave evidence behind. Instead of creating an obvious trail, Prime could move between realities, destroy information, eliminate threats, and remain hidden while Rick searched. The result was a pursuit in which the hunter had to search an enormous multiverse for one specific individual who understood the hunter almost as well as the hunter understood himself. The first and most obvious problem was the size of the multiverse. In an ordinary investigation, a detective can reduce the search area by studying locations, witnesses, records, and patterns. Rick did not have that luxury. There were enormous numbers of possible universes, and each universe could contain different versions of events. Finding one specific Rick among so many possibilities was therefore like looking for one particular person in an almost limitless collection of worlds. Even a genius like Rick could not simply visit every universe and expect to find Prime eventually. The search required useful information that could narrow the possibilities. Portal technology made this problem even worse. Normally, distance limits where a person can go. A target who crosses a city or even a planet still has to physically travel through space. Rick Prime could travel between dimensions. That meant that the distance between two possible hiding places was not a meaningful limitation. Prime could potentially disappear from one reality and emerge in another almost instantly. A search based on ordinary geography was therefore nearly useless. Instead of asking where Prime could physically reach, Rick had to ask where Prime would choose to go. Prime's understanding of portal technology was especially important. He was not someone who had accidentally discovered a portal gun and then used it without understanding how it worked. He was deeply connected to the development and use of the technology that made interdimensional travel possible. This meant that Rick could not assume his own technology gave him an automatic advantage. Prime understood many of the same principles and could potentially predict how Rick would use them. When two people understand the same technology, technological superiority becomes much harder to establish. The similarities between Rick and Prime created a unique problem. Rick was accustomed to being the smartest person around him. Most enemies could be defeated because they did not understand what Rick understood. Prime was different. He was another Rick, which meant that he had comparable intelligence and comparable knowledge of science. Rick could imagine sophisticated strategies because he was brilliant, but Prime could potentially imagine those strategies too. Every clever plan had to account for the possibility that the target had already considered it. That turned the search into a contest of anticipation. Rick was not merely asking where Prime might be. He was also asking what Prime expected Rick to do. Prime could think about the investigation from Rick's perspective and choose actions designed to interfere with it. This made the hunt much more complicated than tracking an ordinary criminal. Rick had to predict a person who could predict him back. Rick Prime also had a major psychological advantage.
