@dr.rachshlo: What is tear break up time and why is it important? Tear break up time (TBUT) is a diagnostic test we use to evaluate the stability of your tear film. After applying a small amount of fluorescein dye to the eye, we ask the patient to blink and then keep their eyes open while we observe the tear film under a blue light. We're measuring how many seconds it takes for the first dry spot to appear on the cornea after a complete blink. Why does this matter? When your tears evaporate or break apart too quickly, it can contribute to fluctuating vision, burning, redness, irritation, and dry eye symptoms. In this video, you're watching the tear film break apart at 6X speed. As dry eye specialist, TBUT is one of the most important clinical findings I use to evaluate dry eye disease and determine the most appropriate treatment.
