Ahmad :
Before the spread of Islam, the core Hausa kingdoms were Daura, Kano, Katsina, Zazzau (Zaria), Gobir, Rano, and Biram (Garun Gabas). Other historical states associated with Hausaland include Zamfara, Kebbi, and Yauri.
Islam didn’t erase our Hausa identity, it guided our religious beliefs. We still speak Hausa, practise our cultural traditions, and preserve our heritage. The main difference is that Islam changed our religious practices, steering Muslims away from traditional worship and rituals that conflict with Islamic teachings.
Our people have also adopted Arabic names. Many do so out of love for the Prophets (peace be upon them all) and their companions, while others simply prefer them over Hausa names. Unfortunately, some even look down on their own names and heritage.
Alhamdulillah for Islam, which gave us religious guidance while allowing us to retain our language and cultural identity.
And brother, Arewa simply means the North. It doesn’t mean every Northerner is Muslim, nor does it mean Muslims have Islamised the entire region. Northern Nigeria has Christians, Muslims, and people who still practise traditional religions, including Bori.
I hope this clears things up. Understanding the North requires understanding its history, culture, and religious diversity.
