please...please...please someone explain the "laughing and then abruptly changing the conversation."

I went on a trip with two girls I’ve known for 15 years. I showed them a picture of a blanket I crocheted and they did that mean girl glance exchange. We’re in our 40’s. I give up 😢

My awareness doesn’t come to me until I’m laying in bed and then I’m alone with my thoughts about how awkward I was.

Honestly just call out people who interrupt. If you shut up, they’ll just continue doing it. Now whenever I’m in a group and someone starts talking over me I just say “don’t interrupt me while I’m speaking”. They shut up and actually listen to what I’m saying, and then they feel awkward for interrupting instead of me feeling awkward for trying to contribute to the conversation. Best behavioural change I’ve ever made

My problem is I can never find the pause or place to jump in and by the time I do the subject has changed so I just stand there and then get asked why I’m being so quiet. Lol

I hate when the group is sharing on a topic, and RIGHT AS it gets to me they change the subject. That's beyond cruel, because you can see on their faces that it's intentional. 😒

I think the hobbies one, they aren’t discussing hobbies, they were discussing something they enjoy and so the ND bonding of own thing or experience is not what they expect or understand and will think you’re making it about you regardless of what the hobby is so are rude about it. I raise my hand in conversations, meetings, anywhere that’s not with my closest people. At work they just think I’m polite, otherwise I just laugh and say both my parents are teachers (and everyone seems to think that’s enough explanation even though it’s really not).

I’m not autistic but I don’t understand social situations that well. My doctors and therapist think it’s a mixture of anxiety and my learning disability’s due to a brain injury as an infant. But I had a hard time understanding what kids at my school were saying to me because they would tease me and wouldn’t be clear about it like using mean words so I never picked it up. So bless my heart, I didn’t know they were being mean so I’d continue to hang out with them and even laugh with them AT MYSELF until I finally just learned what self respect was and cut them off completely (which they were THRILLED about but they apparently didn’t mind bullying me) 😁💔

The autistic experience of info-dumping about your special interest and knowing you’ve gone too far when their eyes bug out and they excuse themselves. 🥲 I always know when someone else is neurodivergent when they choose to stay.

I find most people are very welcoming but I've also learned the way people act with strangers varies much by location and local custom. in Virginia people are totally chill with this. In New York they actually hate you

Whenever I got to play a song during car rides my friends would go quiet and say that song isn't really the vibe before changing it. Each time it happened I thought harder and harder about the perfect song choice but I never seemed to learn the nuance. And my friends weren't mean about it, but yeah. Never got the hang of what the "right" song is supposed to be.
