Mihailo Tolotos was reportedly a Greek Orthodox monk who lived on Mount Athos, a secluded monastic region in northern Greece where women have been forbidden from entering for centuries. According to a newspaper report published in 1938, his mother died shortly after giving birth, and monks raised him in a monastery. The story claims he spent his entire life there and died at the age of 82 without ever seeing a woman in person. Mount Athos follows a tradition known as Avaton, which prohibits women from entering the peninsula. The rule is rooted in Orthodox monastic tradition and the belief that the Holy Mountain is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The region remains home to around 20 monasteries and has maintained its distinctive religious character for more than a thousand years.
After what happened, that homily is heard differently. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, 53, was celebrating Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil when he began speaking about how brief life can be and the importance of not wasting time. “One day, everyone here will die,” he said as he urged the faithful to devote more time to God and their loved ones. Just three minutes later, while the ceremony was still being livestreamed, the enormous wooden cross installed behind the altar came loose and fell on him. Attendees rushed over in desperation to try to help him and began calling for an ambulance, but the priest died from the force of the impact. Patricio belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and had devoted years to religious life. The news caused such a shock that the next day, dozens of people returned to the same church to say goodbye to him and remember him as a “simple, humble, and approachable” priest. The most chilling part is that no one could have imagined that his reflection on making the most of time would, just minutes later, become the final words of his final Mass.
