Sometimes it fades slowly, with every message they take longer to reply to, every moment you feel like you’re becoming a burden, and every conversation where you try to bring things back to the way they were, only to regret saying anything at all. The hardest part isn’t losing someone you love. It’s watching them change right in front of you while desperately holding on to the person they used to be. The person who checked on you for no reason, noticed your sadness even when you said you were fine, and felt your absence even when you said nothing. Eventually, you begin to get used to things you once thought you could never accept. You get used to shorter conversations, less affection, and falling asleep with a thousand unanswered questions you no longer have the energy to ask. And the painful part is that you can never pinpoint the exact moment everything changed. You don’t know when you became ordinary after once meaning so much to them, or when your presence and absence started making no difference at all. In the end, maybe you never asked for much. All you wanted was to remain the person they chose every single time, not the person who had to learn how to live without them while they were still a part of your life. Because some endings don’t come with a goodbye. They come in the form of someone you still love, until one day you realize you’re the only one still trying.
