@flashlight_official66: LET’S ENJOY ANOTHER STORY FROM OUR OLD READER. 📖 BS5-UNIT 19 A WISE AND JUST CHIFE People in the play: TOGBUI, the chief; TSIAMI, the linguist; FIRST ELDER; SECOND ELDER; THIRD ELDER; FOURTH ELDER; YAWA; MANSA; YAO, a servant; AUDIENCE. In the chief’s house TOGBUI: Now, Tsiami. I think we’re ready. Let the women speak. TSIAMI: Now, Yawa, Mansa, we’re ready. Tell us why you were fighting. Yawa, speak first. YAWA: Oh, Togbui, this woman [pointing to MANSA] and I have the same husband. We cook together. We eat together. We sleep together in the same room. Togbui, we do everything together. I had a baby boy, and after three days she also had a baby boy. Our babies look alike, and people even think they are twins; but they are not. Here they are. You can see they are alike. Last night, I woke up and wanted to feed my baby. When I lifted him up he was dead. But I saw that the dead baby was this woman’s baby, not mine. When her baby died, she put him near me, and took my living baby. I’ve asked her to give me my living baby but she doesn’t want to do so. TSIAMI: Togbui, Elders, this is what Yawa says. We will hear Mansa, too. TOGBUI: Now, Mansa, is this story true? What do you say? MANSA: Oh, Togbui, the baby is dead, and we all see it. But the living baby is my baby. YAWA: No, it’s not true; it’s a lie. The living baby is my baby. He is my baby. Mansa always tells lies. FIRST ELDER: Stop talking now, Yawa. Mansa should speak, not you. [There is a murmur among the AUDIENCE. The AUDIENCE agrees with the FIRST ELDER.] TSIAMI: Quiet! Quiet! TOGBUI: Mansa, how do you know the living baby is your baby? The two babies look alike. MANSA: I know that because of his round eyes and round cheeks. YAWA: [Shouting] My baby, too, has the same round eyes and round cheeks! SECOND ELDER: Keep quiet, Yawa! Togbui was not talking to you. TSIAMI: Now, Yawa, why do you say that Mansa took your living baby and put her dead baby in his place? YAWA: She hates me. I know that she could take my baby. She tells lies. She is a bad woman. THIRD ELDER: Don’t you think the living baby would cry when somebody took him away from where he slept? Don’t you think you could hear your own baby crying? What did you do when you heard your own baby crying? YAWA: I was asleep and I did not hear him crying. [There is a murmur from the AUDIENCE.] TSIAMI: Quiet! Quiet, everybody! FOURTH ELDER: You sleep very deeply then! Since you sleep so much, don’t you think you may have slept on your own baby, and killed him? You may not have known it! YAWA: No, no, Togbui. The living baby is my baby, I say! [TOGBUI whispers something to TSIAMI. Then TSIAMI speaks.] TSIAMI: We’ve heard from both of you. The Elders and I will go out and think about the matter. We’ll come back soon. To be continued in the comments section 💬…….

THE POLITICAL WORLD🌍GH🇬🇭 :
[TSIAMI and the ELDERS leave the court. They come back soon after. The people there talk softly to one another. TSIAMI says something softly to TOGBUI, then TOGBUI speaks.]
TOGBUI:
We’ve heard the story from both of you. It’s a difficult matter, but we know what to do. Now, Yao, bring a machete!
[YAO goes out and returns with a machete.]
YAO:
Here’s the machete, Togbui.
[Everybody looks frightened, and the AUDIENCE begins to talk softly again.]
TOGBUI:
Take the babies. We’ll cut each baby into two, and share them between the two women! Each will get a piece of the dead baby and a piece of the living baby. First, cut the living baby into two. That will be fair. It will bring justice.
YAWA:
[She raises her arms happily.] Oh, wise and just Chief! Cut him up, a piece for each!
MANSA:
[She is almost crying.] Oh wise Chief, don’t cut them up. Give the living baby to Yawa. When he grows up he’ll be useful to Yawa herself, and to us. I know he is my baby, but give him to her.
YAWA:
No, wise Chief, cut him up! Yao, that is your order. And that is just.
[YAO has already taken the living baby and raised his machet ready to cut him up.]
TOGBUI:
Stop, Yao! Don’t cut him up. Give the living baby to Mansa. It’s her baby. Now give the dead baby to Yawa. That is her baby.
MANSA:
Live forever, wise Chief! Live forever, just Chief! This is justice indeed!
TOGBUI:
[Speaking to YAWA] You are not the mother of the living baby, and so you wanted us to kill him. If I killed him then both you and Mansa would have dead babies. That is what you wanted. Your baby is the dead one. Take him away. You are a bad woman. Because your story is not true you will pay a fine of ten thousand cedis.
