Under NHS England's current policy, if a patient relapses within 12 months of their first stem cell transplant, they will not have access to a second stem cell transplant on the NHS, regardless of their circumstances. This leaves patients like Faith in a situation where access to potentially lifesaving treatment depends on personal finances and private insurance, rather than clinical need. This policy was introduced almost a decade ago, and urgently needs changing - clinical evidence now shows that decisions around a second stem cell transplant should consider individual circumstances, rather than a fixed 12 month cut off.
