The idea for these Spooky Witches' Cauldron Sugar Cookies came to me on a crisp autumn evening, listening to the wind outside. It's so fun to shape sweet cookie dough into bubbling cauldrons with fiery flames and magic sprinkles for Halloween! These festive cookies are buttery shortbread, decorated with black icing, orange and yellow flames, and colorful sprinkles spilling over. When you bite into one, you get that rich, crumbly shortbread melting into the velvety royal icing and crisp candy sprinkles. The mix of buttery vanilla and sweet icing really makes each bite a treat. Here's how I make them: Recipe Basics Yield: Serves 4 to 6 (approx. 12 cauldron cookies) Measurements: USA Standard Ingredients & Instructions 3 cups All-purpose flour 1 teaspoon Baking powder ¼ teaspoon Salt 1 cup Unsalted butter, softened 1 cup Granulated white sugar 1 Large egg 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract 2 cups Powdered sugar 3 tablespoons Milk Black, orange, and yellow gel food coloring ½ cup Green, purple, and orange nonpareil sprinkles Instructions: 1. Whisk Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. 2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy. 3. Add Wet Ingredients: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until completely incorporated into the butter mixture. 4. Roll and Cut: Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the butter dough until fully combined. Roll out the dough on a floured surface, use a cauldron-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool completely. 5. Prepare Icing: Whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth, then divide and tint portions black, orange, and yellow. 6. Decorate Cauldrons: Pipe black icing to cover the main body of the cauldron, add vibrant orange and yellow icing flames at the base, and cascade colorful sprinkles over the top rim to simulate a bubbling magic potion. Allow the icing to set before serving. Chef’s Notes Sprinkle Spill Tip: Apply the nonpareil sprinkles immediately after piping the top edge of black icing so they sink slightly and stay securely in place as the icing dries. Storage: Keep these decorated cauldron cookies stored in an airtight container at room temperature with parchment paper between layers for up to 5 days.
