@shirley_maskoff_npd: She knew she was emotionally starved. She didn’t know she was being abused. After 24 years of marriage, she says it took leaving and hearing her therapist call her a “victim” to recognize what she had lived through. When there are no visible bruises, people can overlook the hurt—and you can struggle to name it yourself. That doesn’t make it any less real. 💜 Follow Shirley at Narcissistic Clarity for more real stories that put words to experiences people struggle to explain. #NarcissisticAbuse #Narcissism #EmotionalAbuse #ToxicRelationships #SurvivorStories
I went through the same thing! And my children too!

Shirley | Narcissistic Clarity :
You can spend years saying, “At least they don’t hit me,” while feeling alone, walking on eggshells, and being afraid to speak up. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you’ve been swallowing until you’re finally out of it. 💜

I was married to a narcissist for 13, together for 17, I didn’t know I was being abused until the end when it got really bad. I tried to explain this to someone today and was told there’s no way you could be in a relationship with someone who is abusing you and not know it is abuse.

Karen Gingerich :
I was treated for depression for almost the entire 25y of my marriage. The first counseling session I went to after I left, he told me that he didn’t think that I was depressed so much as oppressed. That started my now 10y long journey into narcissism. I am finally coming out of fight or flight and am seeing some big changes in my mood and my chronic pain and chronic fatigue.

I’ve been thru what you are talking about. It takes time but you will be ok. The hard part is coming to terms with finally figuring out that they are lying, faking cheaters who only care about themselves at the expense of the people who love them.

30 years. Vulnerable Covert Narc. I did not realize. I spent over a decade isolated. A therapist had to tell me I was being abused as well, while still in my marriage. It really messes with your ability to trust yourself.

True. The ones who care the least are the ones who are the closest to you, such as family and friends. When you are able and available for everyone around you, they are all in. When it’s your turn to be broken, you will be alone. Very hard pill to swallow.

14 years with a Narc. I was away from him for a month before I realized it was abuse. For me it was being in survival mode and my horrible coping skills

Thanks for saying this…..I didn’t think I was a victim either…..46 years…..I felt sorry for him because of his family’s disfunction. It makes you stronger but the stress and loneliness will break you down.

Same here, 25 years until his demise. I had no idea I was in abusive manipulation the whole time until I was out of the scheme.

Omg yes me too. I left a 40 year marriage and the first few years after I left I started to connect the dots that I was, have been being abused. Light bulb moment. The cptsd was recognized as coming from that abuse. The gaslighting, the your crazy u need therapy, I thought I was crazy. Gone 7 years no contact and healing. Peace at last.
