@abigailrosefoster: Would you prefer to pay more tax and better public goods or less tax and pay for it yourself?

I’d prefer the government to spend our current amount of tax much smarter.😂

The tuition fees one is great in principle, but as a Scot I can confirm there are major downsides. It’s really hard for Scottish students to get into our best Scottish unis as once they’ve filled their quota they don’t go over it as they don’t receive enough money, meaning a lot of bright Scots have to leave for uni. Just look at Edinburgh and St Andrews where Scots are a minority. There is also virtually nothing in the way of grants and bursaries, so most of will have student debt, and the costs of university remain a barrier for the poorest.

public funding should be seen as an investment. it returns greater economic activity and then greater tax returns.

The free tuition means Scottish students often don’t get places as Unis want fee paying students

It’s not free. I pay for the free stuff for others. People should pay for what they use

The definition of better off needs to be better defined. Someone from a lower class background who made it through uni will graduate with student debt from maintenance loans. They may get a good job and in a few years be earning 43k at which point they will start paying 42% tax plus 8% NI (to 50k) plus 9% student loan plus a modest pension contribution. For someone who has not come from money, I.e. no family help to buy property, etc, a marginal rate of over 60% in the low 40s while living in Edinburgh or Glasgow is rough! The free tuition means a wealthier student who didn’t need loans and likely had family help to buy property then has more take home pay (no student loan) despite potentially needing it less

better to have a fairer tax system where the better off pay a little more. better to then use those taxes for the common good and investment in people and infrastructure. The key differences is that the Tories haven't won in scotland since the 1950s and have never been in power at Hollyrood - in England people keep voting to reduce taxes for the wealthy and cuts to the public good. It's a choice and England votes to spend tax money on other things

The higher income tax pays for these "free" services. Rather than upfront payments when needed.

Why do you say "technically higher income tax"? it's not technical. it just "is" Also you forgot that Scotland also has lower income tax for the lowest paid it's not just higher taxes pay for more services (although that's true) it's also, who pays more tax. Why does England charge poorer people more tax?

That would depend on how they spend those extra taxes. I’ll be curious if Scotland are better at spending theirs than we are.

Not as much rain ☔️I live in England and I would choose here all the time despite all the “free” stuff Scotland get.

I'm from England and have lived in Edinburgh for 8 years, originally I supported the Scottish model, but when I break down the numbers, it doesn't seem like the cost of those services is equal to the higher taxes we pay; on universities, the Scottish government pays £1000 per student, so way below what it costs to educate them and way below the 9000 paid in England. it does mean a generation have way lower debt, and it's much more common for people in their 20s and 30s to own a house here; so it's structurally good but a lot of money is being lost somewhere in the process.

its been reapetedly proven countries with higher tax rates resulting in better services have happier people. id gladly pay more tax if I could guarantee it was being spent where it should be but the problem we have in this country is were too much like america and our politicians hand out contracts and tax breaks to those financial donors and friends to line their own pockets

Scotland is in a £25bn deficit, so England is paying for it.
