@anyi.manchester.u: 🚨 Cristiano Ronaldo on how Sir Alex Ferguson helped transform him into a goalscoring machine: “I remember this photograph. Arsenal, 2008. The boss was giving me instructions, and I was listening. People sometimes ask why I always listened to him, even when I may not agree with what he was saying. Because he understood something about my game before I fully understood it myself. When I first arrived at Manchester United, I wanted to beat everybody. One defender, two defenders, sometimes three. If I beat somebody once and he came back, I wanted to beat him again. I enjoyed it. The supporters enjoyed it. The boss? Not always. I remember him stopping me in training one day. ‘Cristiano, what are you doing?’ ‘Dribbling, boss.’ ‘I can see that. What are you trying to achieve?’ ‘Get past the defender.’ ‘And then?’ ‘Get past the next one.’ ‘And then?’ I didn’t answer. He said, ‘Exactly. You don’t know.’ Everybody started laughing. But he wasn’t finished. ‘Cristiano, if you beat three players and lose the ball, what have we gained?’ I said, ‘Nothing, boss.’ ‘And if you beat one player and score?’ ‘We have a goal.’ ‘Good. So why are you making your life so difficult?’ That was Sir Alex Ferguson. He wasn’t telling me to stop dribbling. He was asking me to start thinking about what happened after the dribble. Sometimes I would beat a defender and hear him shouting, ‘Cristiano, finish it!’ Other times, ‘Pass the ball! Ruud is there! Wayne is there!’ And occasionally, when we needed something special, he’d call me over. ‘Cristiano, go at him.’ I’d say, ‘Boss, you told me to keep it simple.’ ‘Yes. Now I’m telling you to always go at him.’ I remember thinking, ‘This man changes his mind every 10 minutes.’ But he wasn’t changing his mind. He was reading the game. And that’s something I didn’t appreciate enough when I was younger. Against Arsenal that day, we created opportunities and wasted them. Nasri scored twice. Rafael gave us hope near the end, but we lost. You can beat your defender five times. The scoreboard doesn’t record any of them. That was something the boss had been trying to make me understand. He wanted me to look at the goalkeeper more than the defender. Think about that. For years, I had been looking at the man standing in front of me. How do I get past him? How do I make him turn? How do I make him fall? Ferguson wanted me thinking about the man standing behind him, inside the goal. ‘Cristiano, that’s the one you need to beat.’ And gradually my game changed. I still loved dribbling. I still wanted to entertain people. But I became more interested in what happened at the end of the move. A goal. An assist. Something that actually changed the match. I started making different runs, attacking spaces, getting into positions where I could finish. I started practicing that more often. And the goals came. People look at the number of goals I’ve scored in my career and sometimes forget there was a young Cristiano Ronaldo who could spend an entire afternoon making a defender miserable without necessarily making the goalkeeper work. Sir Alex saw that player and understood what he could become. He didn’t take away my skills. He gave them a purpose. And that’s why this photograph means something to me. Look at him pointing his finger. Look at me standing there listening. I was already a very good footballer. I knew that. But he was still teaching me how to become a better one. If I had spent my entire career trying to beat the same defender twice, perhaps I would have collected more applause. I don’t think I would have collected nearly as many goals. And certainly not as many trophies. The boss understood that before I did. He taught me that you don’t have to beat everybody on the pitch. Sometimes you only have to beat the goalkeeper.” [ This is the source @ChinoUTD ]#ronaldo #portugal #Soccer #creatorsearchinsights #capcut
