ん (n) is the one kana with no vowel, and it doesn't always sound like an English n. Its sound shifts toward whatever comes next. Before p, b or m, your lips are already closing, so it comes out like m: さんぽ (sanpo, a walk) sounds like "sampo." Before k or g, it slides into the ng of "sing": げんき (genki, well) sounds like "geng-ki." Before t, d or n, it's a plain n: ほんです (hon desu, it's a book). What never changes is the beat. ん always counts as its own beat, so せんせい (sensei, teacher) is four: se-n-se-i. Don't add a vowel after it, and don't swallow it. You'll also see "sempai" and "senpai" for the same word. Older romaji wrote m before p, b and m. The kana stays ん either way. Say せんせい slowly in four beats, then smoothly. Which ん word do you find hardest to say? #japaneselanguagelearning #learnjapanese #japanesegrammar #creatorsearchinsights #learnjapaneseforbeginners
