where I live (in the Balkans), it would be very weird to ask a therapist about their political views, because it’s generally understood that a therapist is there in a professional capacity and that their personal political beliefs are a private matter. i'm wondering is this more common in the US than Europe 🤷🏻♀️

I had a therapist once tell me that my childhood and adult trauma is the worst she's heard so far in her career. At first I was just in shock she said that, then temporarily validated for once, and then I felt like it was awful for her to make that statement to me. It was a weird rollercoaster of emotions throughout my healing process.

My therapist started bringing her personal political views into our sessions, which I felt was incredibly unprofessional. I was there to work on myself, not debate politics or listen to her personal opinions. Ultimately, I decided to stop seeing her because of it.

Oh wow, the politics is actually one of the most interesting questions I have heard on this so far. I never thought about it, but oooooof, I would be insanely uncomfortable with someone I feel doesn’t have the same morals I do.

there’s exceptions to the rule but if your therapist is educated and objectively good at their job it’s very likely they lean a certain way politically ;)

Politics, especially now are so important to discuss prior to scheduling appts. If my therapist doesn’t share the same core human right values as me, it would be a horrible relationship and I wouldn’t feel safe sharing my concerns or frankly anything with them.
