One of the most interesting studies presented around ASCO 2026 examined the relationship between GL P-1 medications and outcomes in women with breast cancer who also had obesity or type 2 diabetes. Researchers analyzed data from more than 840,000 women with breast cancer and found that GL P-1 receptor agonist use was associated with lower all-cause mortality and lower risk of recurrence or death in certain patient groups. Importantly, this was an observational study and does NOT prove that GL P-1 medications improve breast cancer outcomes. What I found particularly interesting was that patients taking SGLT2 inhibitors—a different class of medications that also improves metabolic health—had similar outcomes. This raises an important question: Are we seeing a direct GL P1 effect? Or are we seeing the benefits of improving metabolic health through better insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation, inflammation control, and body weight? We don't know yet. But as an oncology scientist, I think this study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that metabolic health may play a much larger role in cancer outcomes than many people realize.
