@picks_and_shovels: 🚀 Could SpaceX and Starlink become a serious competitor to Verizon and AT&T? 📡📱 SpaceX is expanding satellite connectivity through Starlink, potentially changing how consumers access wireless services. 🔹 What is Starlink? A satellite internet network operated by SpaceX that uses thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide internet connectivity. 🔹 Direct-to-cell technology: Starlink can connect compatible smartphones directly to satellites in supported areas, helping extend coverage beyond traditional cell towers. 🔹 T-Mobile partnership: T-Mobile and SpaceX announced their partnership in 2022 to expand connectivity through satellite technology. 🔹 Verizon and AT&T: Both companies have pursued satellite-to-phone connectivity through partnerships with AST SpaceMobile, a separate satellite communications company. 🔹 Potential competition: As satellite technology develops, it could provide additional connectivity options, particularly in rural and underserved areas. 🔹 Potential market impact: Increased competition could eventually influence wireless pricing, coverage, and service offerings. However, the financial impact on Verizon and AT&T remains uncertain. 📡 The bigger picture: Satellite connectivity is evolving, but traditional cellular networks remain essential for providing high-capacity wireless service. 📚 This content is strictly for informational and educational purposes only. ⚠️ We are not financial advisors. @GeekManGreg: 🤔 The one issue… There is so much junk around the earth right now, it’s only going to take one domino effect when something breaks and starts smashing into everything, or one big solar storm, to knock out all those satellites. Then you’re going to have how many people (?) who won’t have Internet and/or phone service for months or years. Because you can’t fix a broken satellite system after a catastrophic event in orbit nearly as quickly as something that hits a terrestrial system.
