@watchtheculture: America’s literacy problem is no longer confined to children who fell behind during the pandemic. In 2024, reading scores fell again for fourth- and eighth-graders, while 12th-grade reading reached its lowest level ever recorded on the NAEP assessment. Only 35% of high-school seniors were considered academically prepared for entry-level college reading, and the decline was especially steep among already struggling students. At the same time, the way Americans consume information has shifted toward short-form feeds, captions, summaries and increasingly AI-generated answers, all formats that can make it easier to avoid sustained reading altogether. The new tech probably didn’t create the literacy crisis, but it’s changing the environment in which people learn to read and think. Students can now summarize books they haven’t read, generate essays they haven’t written and get answers without working through the underlying material, while adults increasingly encounter information through fragments optimized for speed and engagement. The concern isn’t simply that people are reading less; it’s that schools and everyday life are making it easier to function without practicing the kind of deep reading, writing and comprehension that literacy actually requires. #cvpriority #usa #news #politics #reading
