The decision is probably one of the worst they could’ve made. The new Ultimate Universe wasn’t perfect, but books like the Ultimates and Ultimate X-Men did great new things with the characters. The Ultimates especially had such an amazing story and could’ve spawned so many solo books itself. It struggled the most when it played it safe (doing a typical Wolverine story, not doing much interesting with Spider-Man) but those books were not bad. Instead of letting the amazing writers on those books keep trying new things, they shut it down. Now we have a useless edgy knockoff of the Absolute Universe where all your favorite characters are gonna die or be horrible mutilated (as per usual with marvel what ifs) and it’s gonna get cancelled after a year because marvel is allergic to letting Hickman finish a story the way he wants. This company is floundering right now

Well uhh actually Scott Snyder Pitched something like this to Marvel earlier but they declined on it. So he sat on it then repitched it to DC who picked it up. I believe this had been in development since 2022 alongside the All In Initiative.

The funniest part is that it’s not even trying to compete with the whole universe, it’s JUST Absolute Batman. Thats the only book with a constant, overt horror influence. The other books get dark sure but not as overtly horrific as Batman does.

Tbh I do like what marvel is doing with the midnight universe so far. I just hope they didn't think "let's make it darker" is the only reason people like Absolute Universe. The characters are still relatively the same, just in different points of who they were in their main universe. The world is darker and the heroes are still a light in the dark against a world cast in darkness

they cancelled the ultimate line which was the best thing they had done in a while just because they were mad it was better than 616, so I'm not engaging with midnight at all. there is nothing stopping them from doing it again.
