Still, we choose them. ❤️ We choose dachshunds knowing what can come along with loving this breed. We know about IVDD. We know there’s a good chance that at some point in their lives, we may have to face it in one form or another. Maybe it’s a flare-up that gets better with rest and medication. Maybe it doesn’t happen until they’re older. Maybe it’s surgery and a long recovery. Maybe they recover without surgery. Maybe, with surgery or without it, they don’t regain the ability to walk and learn to fly around just as happily on their little wheelies. And sometimes, as much as we hate to even think about it, this disease can mean having to say goodbye. And hopefully, some will be lucky enough to never face it at all. But we know all of those possibilities are there. Still, we choose them. We bring them home and do all the things. We buy the ramps. We avoid the stairs. We keep them lean. We try to stop the jumping. We give them the supplements we hope will help support their backs and joints. We do everything we’re told can help protect those little backs, hoping and praying that somehow we’ll be one of the lucky ones. But IVDD doesn’t make promises. You can do everything right and it can still happen. Still, we choose them. And sometimes I really do question our sanity. Because who in their right mind goes through IVDD with one dachshund, knows exactly what this disease can look like, eventually says goodbye to that dog after a lifetime together...and then turns around and gets another dachshund knowing full well they could end up right back here again? Apparently, we do. Because there is just something about a dachshund. They’re stubborn. They’re funny. They’re mischievous. They’re ridiculously smart when they want to be. They’re loyal, loving and absolutely FULL of personality. Somehow these little dogs with their short legs and long bodies bring so much joy and life into a home that once you’ve loved one, it’s hard to imagine not having that kind of love in your life. So even after we’ve seen what can happen... Still, we choose them. And if that day comes, your life can change overnight. For weeks or even months, their recovery can become your life. You carry them. You help them potty. You give medications. You do exercises and therapy. You go to appointments. You rearrange your home and your schedule. You lose sleep. You worry about every little movement and wonder a hundred times a day if you’re doing enough. And you celebrate things you never imagined you’d celebrate. A paw placed correctly. A tail wag. A few good steps. A steadier turn. And sometimes the victory isn’t walking again at all. Sometimes it’s watching your little dog take off in those wheelies and realizing that life may look a little different than you hoped, but they’re still happy, they’re still living it, and they’re still very much themselves. Every IVDD journey is different. Every recovery is different. And every victory is different. This road is hard. Really hard. There are easier roads. There are breeds that don’t come with this particular worry hanging over your head. There are dogs we could choose that wouldn’t have us wondering when or if that IVDD bomb might go off. We know that too. Still, we choose them. We choose them knowing the risk. We do everything we can to protect them. We hope and pray that IVDD never becomes part of their story. And if it does, we fight for them with everything we’ve got, whatever their road ends up looking like. Maybe that’s the crazy part of being a dachshund person. We know what could happen. Some of us have already lived it. Some of us have said goodbye to one after sharing a lifetime with them...and then opened our hearts to another one knowing we could someday have to do it all over again. Who in their right mind does that? We do. Because there’s just something about a dachshund. And despite everything we know... Still, we choose them. ❤️🐾 #Dachshund #minidachshund #dachshunddaily #viralpet #ForeverHome
