Mark Cuban did not walk away from the Broadcast.com sale as the only person who got rich. When Yahoo acquired the company in 1999, the deal was valued at approximately $5.7 billion in stock. Cuban became a billionaire. But according to Cuban, the bigger story was what happened to the employees. He said roughly 300 of Broadcast.com’s 330 employees became millionaires because they owned stock or options in the company. That means more than 90% of the workforce reportedly walked away from the exit with enough wealth to become millionaires. Broadcast.com had started as an early internet radio business before Cuban and Todd Wagner built it into a major internet company during the dot-com boom. The sale transformed the founders’ fortunes. It also transformed the finances of hundreds of employees who had taken part in building the company. The numbers are what make the exit extraordinary. $5.7B acquisition. 330 employees. 300 reportedly became millionaires. One company sale created hundreds of new fortunes at once. Cuban has repeatedly argued that employees should have a chance to share in the value they help create. Broadcast.com became one of his clearest examples of that approach. The company was eventually shut down by Yahoo after years of struggling to turn the acquisition into a lasting business. But for the people who held equity when the deal happened, the outcome was very different. Cuban became a billionaire. And according to his own account, hundreds of his employees became millionaires alongside him. Source: Mark Cuban’s public statements and interviews; Yahoo acquisition records and historical filings. Disclaimer: The claim that 300 of 330 employees became millionaires comes from Mark Cuban’s own account and is not independently verified by Yahoo’s public filings. The $5.7 billion figure was the announced value of the all-stock transaction and fluctuated with Yahoo’s share price.
