A powerful earthquake struck Panama today, sending people rushing from buildings and shaking parts of Central America. The first automatic reports put the earthquake at magnitude 8.0. After scientists reviewed the data, the U.S. Geological Survey listed the main event at about M7.6, while other agencies reported roughly 7.7. The quake struck near Pitaloza Arriba in central Panama, at a shallow depth which can make shaking at the surface especially intense. And then came the aftershocks. Within the sequence, Panama experienced additional strong earthquakes, including a M6.6 event and dozens of smaller aftershocks. AP reports that more than 45 aftershocks were recorded as the region continued to shake. Reports from Panama describe: 🏚️ damaged homes and buildings ⛪ damage to historic structures 🛣️ large cracks in some roads ✈️ temporary disruptions at Tocumen International Airport 🚇 temporary suspension of metro service 🏫 schools closed nationwide as authorities inspected damage The good news so far: no mass-casualty event has been reported, and the Panama Canal remained operational. 🌊 AND THEN CAME THE TSUNAMI ALERTS. Because of the size and location of the quake, initial tsunami threat messages were issued for parts of the Pacific coast of Central and South America. But after further monitoring, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center cleared the threat and now says there is no tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat in effect. What makes this especially striking is the timing. Just days ago we were looking at maps showing more than 200 magnitude-4+ earthquakes around the world in a single week. Now Panama has been hit by one of the strongest earthquakes of the year. That does not prove the world is entering some coordinated seismic event earthquakes happen constantly along active plate boundaries, and scientists still cannot predict a major earthquake from a global pattern like this. But when an event this powerful happens, it reminds us just how dynamic the ground beneath us really is. M7.6 MAIN SHOCK M6.6 SECOND STRONG QUAKE 45+ AFTERSHOCKS TSUNAMI THREAT ISSUED THEN CLEARED And the shaking may not be finished yet. The Earth has been incredibly active lately. #panama #earthquake #spirituality #awareness #energy
