@bannonswarroom.us: Tom Cruise’s new movie, Digger, struggled at the box office, but some of Hollywood’s biggest stars are rushing to defend it. Now, Anne Hathaway has joined the growing list of celebrities praising the film despite its disappointing start. The black comedy, directed by Alejandro Iñárritu, stars Cruise as a powerful oil tycoon whose drilling operation triggers a major environmental disaster. Despite its ambitious story, the film earned just $8 million during its opening weekend, against a reported $160 million budget. Hathaway gave the movie a perfect score on Letterboxd, calling it brilliant, smart, funny, and ambitious. She encouraged audiences to watch it and decide for themselves. She is far from alone. Mandy Patinkin called Digger an “instant classic,” while Glen Powell praised its fearless performances and predicted it would stand the test of time. Jane Fonda also defended the film, saying its bold approach raises important questions about the climate crisis. Directors Ron Howard, Guillermo del Toro, and Alfonso Cuarón have also shown support, arguing that the movie deserves more attention than its poor reception suggests. Their public praise has drawn comparisons to past Hollywood campaigns that tried to change a film’s reputation through celebrity support. But can famous names persuade audiences to give a struggling movie another chance? The debate raises a bigger question about filmmaking: should art be judged by its opening weekend, or by the ideas it leaves behind? Sometimes, a film’s biggest challenge begins after it reaches theaters.
