If I Had Only 30 Days to Help You Get Unstuck, Here’s Where I’d Start If you came to me after a breakup and said, “Michael, you’ve got 30 days. Help me get unstuck,” I wouldn’t start by trying to help you get your ex back. I wouldn’t start by analyzing their attachment style. I wouldn’t spend three weeks trying to figure out whether they’re avoidant. I wouldn’t have you dissecting their social media posts, looking for hidden messages, or trying to determine whether no contact is “working.” In fact, I’d want to get you away from all of that as quickly as possible. Because if I only had 30 days with you, there are three things I’d want to accomplish. First, I’d help you stabilize. Because heartbreak can make you incredibly reactive. You’re checking your phone. You’re not sleeping well. Your appetite may be all over the place. One minute you’re determined to move forward, and 20 minutes later you’re composing a six-paragraph text explaining everything you wish you had said. That’s not the time to be making major emotional decisions. So before we worried about anything else, we’d work on getting you grounded again. Second, I’d help you stop feeding the attachment. This is a big one. Because you can’t keep picking at the wound and then wonder why it isn’t healing. Every time you check their social media… Every time you go looking for some little piece of information about their life… Every time you reread the texts… Every time you ask somebody, “Have you heard anything about them?” You’re giving your brain another little dose of the very person you’re trying to learn how to live without. That doesn’t mean you suddenly stop caring. It means you stop turning every anxious feeling into an action. Then the third thing I’d work on might actually be the most important: I’d help you rebuild your internal security. Because eventually, this has to become about more than the breakup. I want you to get to the place where somebody else’s silence doesn’t determine your worth. Where somebody pulling away doesn’t immediately make you chase harder. Where uncertainty doesn’t send you scrambling for reassurance. Where you can love somebody deeply without losing yourself trying to keep them. That’s the real work. So if I had 30 days, I wouldn’t promise you that you’d never think about your ex again. I wouldn’t promise that you’d be completely healed. I’d want something much more realistic—and much more valuable. I’d want you thinking differently. Responding differently. Making different decisions. Beginning to trust yourself again. Because sometimes you don’t need 30 days to completely change your life. You need 30 days to stop living it the same way. And that, by the way, is exactly the philosophy behind something I’ve been building called Anxious to Anchored. I’ll be telling you more about that very soon. For now, remember those three things: Stabilize. Stop feeding the attachment. Rebuild your internal security. That’s where I’d start. #healing #breakup #breakuprecovery #recovery
