@jeannemariebranche: Dancers, sometimes the self-doubt you’re carrying actually comes from how you’ve been led. Maybe you’ve experienced a teacher, choreographer, or director who… • Treats your questions as disrespect. • Needs to be the most talented person in the room. • Holds you back when you’re ready for bigger opportunities. • Embarrasses you in front of others to establish control. • Makes you feel guilty for training somewhere else. • Welcomes your voice only when you agree with them. • Takes credit for your wins without acknowledging your work. • Says “that’s how the industry works” when you raise a concern. • Expects you to read their mind, then punishes you for getting it wrong. • Turns every apology into an explanation of why it was your fault. • Uses fear to earn your cooperation. • Measures your loyalty by how much of your growth revolves around them. Someone feeling threatened by your growth doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. You CAN receive corrections, respect your teachers, and take responsibility for your work while still expecting to be treated with respect. To lead, dancers shouldn’t have to shrink to make you feel like a leader. And dancers, you don’t have to make yourself smaller to deserve a place in the room.
