I think it’s important to note in her relationship with alcohol that when she becomes violent and cruel, it is with a person who wanted to force her to drink alcohol. I am not sure that that behavior would emerge if she ever chose to serve herself alcohol in another setting.

I know in the book she starts wearing gloves specifically because the arthritis in her hands makes them look old and deformed, which she is trying to hide. One of her biggest tools to manipulate was her beauty

Cathy's aversion to alcohol, is because it lets her guard down and starts acting on impulse when influenced by it. It ruins her image to be secretive. Her aversion to light is a metaphor of shame built up through the course of time. She was fine before, but killing Faye disturbed her peace of mind more than she thought she could handle. Stop reading everything literally.

the type of arthritis that she has, with the swelling and the redness visible on the skin is most likely autoimmune which explains alcohol intolerance, light sensitivity, etc. I also agree with others who said that she may have had syphilis

alcohol is called "spirts". As it brings out who people truly are. some are aggressive, some happy, and some sad.I think the vlack represents her hiding from the truth, the light. Light exposes and light doesnt conceal what is hidden. In the middle episode. Lee gave us the understand in simple terms. "The greatest terror a child can have is that he isn't loved. Rejection is the hell he fears. And with rejection comes anger. And with anger, a need for revenge. And that is the story of mankind." thus line tells you about the whole story here.
