Cardhu 16 Year Old, Diageo Special Release This limited Speyside single malt was matured in refill and recharred American oak casks, with a final finish in Jamaican rum casks and bottled at a robust cask strength of 58% ABV. On the nose, bright and vibrant aromas unfold immediately: lemon zest and white grape lead the way, intertwined with ripe mango and pink grapefruit. There is a quiet, earthy moss undertone wrapped alongside honeyed malt and subtle wood spice, while a few drops of water tease out delicate white pepper within the bouquet. On the palate, the whisky carries a creamy, full-bodied texture. Rich rum toffee sweetness meets spiced pineapple and green banana, the lush tropical notes held in check by crisp oak spice that creates a gentle tingling sensation. It retains Cardhu’s signature honeyed Speyside character, while the rum cask maturation lends an extra layer of tropical richness. A touch of water softens the mouthfeel into something silkier, yet the peppery spice remains clearly present. The finish sits at medium-short length, warm and balanced. Sweet tropical fruit and brown sugar fade slowly, paired with lingering oak spice. After adding water, the drying woody character grows more noticeable, tapering off softly and leaving a comfortable, gentle warmth. I’ve also picked up three more bottles that I plan to review later. I’m really excited about them, though I haven’t opened any yet. First is Ardbeg Uigeadail, the classic Islay single malt. It’s cask strength at 54.2%, matured in a blend of bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. It balances Ardbeg’s signature powerful coastal peat smoke with rich dried fruit and dark sweetness from the sherry, one of the most well-loved core releases from Ardbeg. Second is Spirit of Scotland Ledaig 2013, 12 Years Old. This is a limited single cask bottling from Gordon & MacPhail, bottled at a high cask strength of 61.2%. It’s a first-fill sherry cask expression from the Island distillery Ledaig, non-chill filtered, with rich sherry fruit and underlying smoky maritime character. Only 621 bottles were produced. The third one is Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire 18 Year Old, a peated Highland single malt at cask strength 53.3%. It is an unusual heavily peated Highland whisky rather than Islay, with coastal seaweed smoke, earthy bonfire notes and rounded sherry sweetness after long 18-year maturation
