@mushinjournal: The Japanese concept “Mushin” (無心) translates closely to “no mind.” It is the stillness in which action requires no thought; and it is almost always mistaken for the emptiness it most resembles and least is. There are two minds that act without thinking, and they are opposites. The first belongs to the novice, who does not think because he has nothing yet to think with, whose calm is only the blankness of a page unwritten. The second belongs to the master, who has thought ten thousand times through the same motion until the thinking wore a channel so deep it no longer needs to rise. One emptiness is the absence of knowledge. The other is knowledge grown so total it has sunk beneath the need to be recalled. They look identical from outside, and they could not be further apart. Mushin is the mind so full it no longer spills into thought. This is why the state cannot be reached by relaxing into it, only by grinding through everything it transcends. The ease you see in the master is the compression of a thousand difficult hours, each one spent consciously, deliberately, thinking through what he can now do without a flicker of thought. To seek the emptiness directly, skipping the labor that earns it, is to arrive at the novice’s blankness and mistake it for the master’s silence. The first is where you begin. The second is what begins to move only after the thinking has been buried too deep to find. A riverbed does not decide where the water runs; it was cut, slowly, by the same water it now guides without effort, and the effortlessness is the finished shape of an enormous and forgotten labor. The empty mind was never the starting point. It was the last thing built, on top of everything else. - Mushin Journal exists for those who want to think less, see more, and act with deliberate precision- whether in conflict, decision making, or solitude.
