Something kept disturbing me I prayed for her for a while before eventually falling asleep Around 6 a.m.,my phone rang. It was Emily. The moment I answered,I heard her crying. “IJ!” “Emily, what happened?” “I don’t know!” “Calm down. Tell me what happened.” “My husband didn’t come back last night.” I sat upright “What?” “He came around 5:30 this morning.” “Where did he say he was?” “I asked him.” “And?” “He started shouting at me.” My heart began beating faster. “What did you ask him?” “I only asked where he had been all night.” I was silent. I told Emily to come back to the apartment. When she arrived,she sat down and cried. I held her hand. Then I told her everything I had seen at the reception. The second ring. Emily stared at me “You’re saying you saw all these things?” “Yes.” “Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because I didn’t want to destroy your wedding without evidence.” She became quiet. Then she looked at the rosary still hanging around her neck. She touched it slowly. For the first time since the wedding, she wasn’t defending her husband. She was thinking. And that was when I told her something I would never forget. “Emily,don’t fight with this man because of what I saw. Just watch him.” She nodded. “Watch everything.” She agreed. But none of us knew that the strange wedding reception was only the beginning. Before I left Lagos,I sat down with Emily and spoke to her privately. “Please,don’t tell your parents about what I told you yet.” She looked at me. “Why?” “Because we don’t have enough evidence. If you tell them now,they may confront your husband, and we still don’t know exactly what is going on.” She agreed. I brought out one of my rosaries and handed it to her. “Keep this. I have another one.” She collected it and nodded. “Whenever you can, pray with it.” “I will.” We hugged and said goodbye. Emily remained in Lagos with her husband. She decided to continue with her marriage normally.She cooked for him,took care of the house and treated him well. She didn’t allow him to notice that she was watching his movements. Her husband had rented a beautiful well furnished duplex for them. The house was spacious, with several rooms,a staircase and enough space for visitors. Since he was going back abroad after spending a few weeks in Nigeria, he paid the rent for one year so Emily could remain there after his departure. To be continued..
